On the laundry list of things you need to plan ahead for in preparation for your big day, one major to-do is choosing your music set list. In addition to hiring your DJ or band, it’s crucial that you go over the songs they plan to play for you on your wedding day. In fact, Farah Saint-Jean of Spectacular Affairs, LLC, in New York City believes music to be one of the most important aspects in setting the mood for a wedding celebration. For this reason, she recommends that the couple not only carefully select their music pros, but provide him or her with a song list that holds special meaning for their relationship or some of the best wedding songs of all time, as well as a list of music that should not be played. “The wrong music can ruin the wedding reception,” she warns. 

Jodi R.R. Smith, owner of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, agrees that music plays a major role—and recommends songs to match the ages of your guests. “You could play a few from the 40s for your grandmother, a few from the 50s and 60s for your great aunts and uncles, a few from the 70s and 80s for their kids, some from the 90s and 00s for your aunts and uncles, and 2010 to now for your friends and cousins,” she says. “Everyone should be included and everyone should hear a song that resonates so much that they want to get up and dance.”

When meeting with your DJ to plan song selections, be clear in your vision and expectations. Lindsey Sachs of COLLECTIVE/by Sachs in Boulder, Colorado and Minneapolis  recommends asking how many songs are reasonable to play given your reception duration so you have a better understanding of how your top picks may be mixed with their selections. “Your DJ may also ask if you’re open to accepting guests requests,” she says. “If so, know that the number of songs played from your list may take a back seat to accommodate.”

To give you some inspiration while you’re making your musical selects for your big day, we asked wedding planners to share, in their view, the best wedding song of all time.

“For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder

“I’m biased since this was my wedding song, however, the reason it’s my favorite is because the lyrics are exactly how my husband and I feel about each other,” says Danielle Rothweiler of Rothweiler Event Design in Verona, New Jersey. “I think it’s really important to pick a song that you and your partner can relate to instead of selecting something trendy.”

“This is a timeless song that basically expresses one lover’s dedication to the other and evokes emotions of love, gratitude and joy,” says Farah Saint-Jean of Spectacular Affairs, LLC In New York. “It is simply beautiful.”

“This is an unexpected first dance song that has some added interest because of the minor keys it incorporates,” says Kate Lerman of Chicago Vintage Weddings in Chicago. “You also can’t go wrong dancing to it!”

When it comes to the most special and important day of your life, it’s hard to not get at least a little worked up over the little details. However, it’s important to realize which factors are in—and out of—your control. One that you can’t predict or change, no matter how hard you try, is the weather. “While it can be a hassle if you are caught in a sudden downpour on the way to your ceremony, or if a freak snowstorm blows in the weekend of your wedding, it doesn’t have to ruin your wedding,” says Kimberly Lehman, wedding and event planner at Love, Laughter & Elegance.

 

She does recommend, however, that all couples have a backup plan in place for your wedding, especially if any part of your celebration will take place outdoors. To help you cope with the unpredictability that comes along with wedding weather, here are some key reasons why it’s not worth stressing over.

You can’t control it.

To really enjoy the wedding day to the fullest, Leah Weinberg, wedding planner, owner, and executive planner at Color Pop Events, urges brides and grooms to accept that certain things will happen that day that are outside of their control. “When those things happen, you’ve just gotta roll with it,” she says. “Embrace whatever happens and make the best of it—that advice goes for things other than weather, too.”

 

Stress might kill the mood.

Not only is stress bad for your own health, but it can impact the moods of those around you. “If you find yourself snapping at others due to the weather, it could potentially cause more permanent damage,” says Sabrina Zeile of Weddings By Sabrina. “Even though it’s your special day, it’s important to be considerate of others.” If the weather is poor, she suggests shifting your focus to another aspect of the wedding like dancing.

 

Inclement weather might enhance your photos.

Believe it or not, but rain can make for incredibly romantic photos with ideal lighting, so embrace it! “I’ve seen some stellar photos taken on rainy days, so if you’re bummed about the rain, just flip your mindset and think of all of the cool images that are going to come out of it,” says Weinberg.

 

Your wedding day will fly by.

What’s the use in spending the majority of it worried and stressed? It’s important to remember that this day will happen rain or shine, and it will fly by. Instead of spending this precious time stressed out, which can cause negative effects such as headaches, fatigue, upset stomach, and muscle pain, Zeile suggests relaxing and re-focusing so you can enjoy the moments you do have while they’re happening.

What was your design inspiration?

I have long wanted to do a starry night theme. Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting plays well along with this. The mood was to be ethereal, light, sparkling and romantic. A little bit of heaven on earth, if you will.

Describe your flowers.

I wanted to use a mostly white floral scheme, with a hint of blue and silver. My florist created lush, gorgeous bouquets and a centerpiece featuring white anemone, white hydrangea, scabiosa, waxflower, white veronica, dusty miller, and peonies. The flowers were a bright contrast against the navy and silver table linens and formal dresses. The flowers were also to be reminiscent of groups of stars.

Describe your cake.

The cake that Gearhart Custom Cakes created is absolutely gorgeous! It is a four-tier cake, with the bottom layer hand painted in silver.  The top 3 tiers are covered in sparkling navy blue edible glitter. Each tier is defined by a band of bling. The topper is a custom acrylic piece made especially for this project, to finish the cake beautifully.

Tell us about your attire choices.

The attire for this styled shoot was so glamorous! The bridal gown and starry overskirt were custom-made for this shoot by Nidel Dresses in Louisiana. It is a modified trumpet gown with a strapless, sweetheart neckline, and corset back. The removable overskirt features a jeweled belt, and layers of starry fabric. Light and flowy, and simply gorgeous! The cathedral length ombre blue bridal veil was from Over the Moon Bridal in Washington state. The dark blue bridesmaid gown was provided by Doreen Leaf Designs in Hartville, Ohio. The designer is Madeline Gardner for Mori Lee. It is a floor length gown with allover lace and sequins. Very sparkly!

The gentlemen wore stylish suits of their own. The groom’s dark blue tie, pocket square, and pocket watch were all provided by Groomsday. The groomsman’s silver bow tie was provided by Doreen Leaf Designs.

Describe any handmade, DIY or personal items.

The jewelry provided by LivyLynn Vintage is handmade and very unique. Their collection is eclectic and matched our bride’s fun-loving personality.

The dark blue gauze table runner on the outdoor tablescape was custom made and hand-dyed especially for this shoot by Thistle and Twill. There are little white flecks in the material of the runner, that are reminiscent of stars twinkling in the night sky.

Describe the tablescape elements.

We had three tablescapes for this shoot:

The indoor tablescape was created on the 200-year old dining table and chairs, which are part of the Spring Hill Historic Home estate. We used the navy blue satin tablecloth and napkins, and the navy diamond overlay, from L’nique Linens. The silver luxe charger plates are also from L’nique Linens. The china, silverware, and crystal are all part of the Spring Hill estate. The floral centerpiece was created by Alyssa Schlegel, and we used the gold cake topper from Ever Laser to complete the look. The favors are blue and silver wrapped Hershey’s Kisses, placed in small tulle gift bags printed with silver stars.

The cake table was located in the formal parlor of Spring Hill. The table was covered in the navy blue satin tablecloth and the silver medallion sheer overlay from L’nique Linens. The gorgeous four-tier navy blue and silver cake was provided by Gearhart Custom Cakes. The silver mirrored acrylic cake topper was made by Traditions Engraving. We also placed blue and silver star-shaped votive candles around the table for extra sparkle.

The third tablescape was placed outdoors on the terraced lawn of the Spring Hill home. Dining al fresco under the stars was the order of the evening for our couples. The table was draped in navy blue satin, with a silver sequin table runner and navy blue napkins. The china, silverware and crystal are all part of the Spring Hill estate. The centerpiece is the same one that was used on the indoor tablescape. We changed out the cake topper to a different silver one created by Traditions Engraving, The heavy pewter candlesticks were added to provide illumination into the evening hours.

My Ring Bearer Is Too Young to Walk Down the Aisle Himself—What Are Our Options?

Congrats! You’ve selected a ring bearer for your big day. Now all you need to do is finalize the details of his big entrance. But what happens if your ring bearerof choice is too young to walk down the aisle himself? Most couples don’t have a long list of potential ring bearers to choose from—brides and grooms generally select the youngsters their closest to, like their nephews, young cousins, children of close friends, or even their own kiddos. If one of these important little guys isn’t walking yet, you’re not going to deny him the role, are you?

 

The choice is yours, but most couples decide that it doesn’t really matter if this attendant makes an entrance on his own or with a little help. If he needs a hand getting down the aisle, know that there are plenty of solutions wedding planners rely on when it comes to a too-young-to-walk-on-his-own ring bearer. We reached out to some of our go-to experts for their best solutions for incorporating a tiny ring bearer in the wedding processional.

Have the parent(s) carry the baby down.

If you’re having a very young child serve as the ring bearer at your wedding, chances are, his parents will be in attendance as well. Don’t hesitate to ask if they’d be willing to accompany (A.K.A. carry) their child down the aisle. If you prefer a more unified front, wedding and event planner Taylor Keenan suggests asking the parents to coordinate attire to show the significance.

 

Decorate a wagon or carriage for the baby to sit in.

Kimberly Lehman, wedding and event planner at Love, Laughter & Elegancerecommends pulling small children and toddlers down the aisle in a decorated wagon or stroller. “If the child has a favorite doll, or push or riding toy, consider allowing them to bring it along for the journey to make them feel more secure,” she says. “If the child likes balloons, (and, really, what kid doesn’t?) let them carry a small colorful bunch.”

 

Buy a personalized walker and have the baby push it down the aisle.

If your ring bearer needs a little help standing, but has enough leg power to keep his wheels in motion, a baby walker can be just the thing to help him walk down the aisle. “The walker can be painted in wedding colors and have the names of the bride and groom, the date, or even the name of the ring bearer,” suggests Keenan. “It also serves as a really nice gift for the baby!” If the aisle is a long one, have someone carry the baby half way down it and pull out the walker as they get closer.

 

Skip his role in the processional altogether.

There’s no rule that says a child can’t be ring bearer just because he didn’t walk down the aisle? “If the baby is simply too young to participate, in the programyou can have a picture of the ring bearer along with a cute biography,” suggests Keenan. “Ring Bearer: John Smith, nephew to the bride, is three months old. John loves to play with his toy giraffes, drink from his bottle and take naps. Currently, John is taking his nap!”

What to Do If You (or One of Your Wedding VIPs) Are Sick the Week of the Wedding

Ever become overwhelmed with worry when you think about all of the big and little things about your wedding day that you need to go right? It’s totally normal to freak out—you’re planning a huge event and a day that will hold immense meaning for you, your fiancé and your families. Of course, like anything in life, nothing is perfect and your wedding won’t be either. But that’s okay! Even illness is inevitable, especially during cold and flu season, so it’s smart to be prepared for anything and have more than one person that you can go to for support.

 

What happens if you, the bride or groom, or one of your wedding VIPS becomes ill during the week of your nuptials? It’s a tough dilemma that can totally happen. Of course, if your symptoms are treatable you can get on medications, but what happens if you get sick the day of the wedding? Kimberly Lehman, wedding and event planner at Love, Laughter & Elegance tries to be prepared for any situation—even the bride and groom turning green on their big day. “I have an emergency kit that contains over-the-counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen, antacid tablets, various topical creams, a small first aid kit and personal products,” she says. “Being trained in general first aid, CPR and how to use an AED is a good idea for all event professionals.”

 

If you’re worried about getting sick—or someone important getting sick—before or at your wedding, here are some doable lines of defense.

Hire a wedding planner at the beginning of your planning journey.

“A planner will be able to step in and take care of any last-minute crisis, whether it’s a few weeks before or on the ‘day of’ to ensure you have a special and memorable day you feeling like your day was ruined,” says Deborah L. Erb, owner and event planner at Simply Events Inc. “Planners also carry emergency kits with them in case someone needs pain reliever, something for an upset stomach or first aid kit.” They can also run out to get you anything else you need from a local pharmacy to help you and your loved ones get through the day!

 

Take care of yourself in the best way possible.

Planning a wedding is a stressful time—not only for the bride and groom, but also for those participating in the planning process, such as your parents, siblings, and wedding party. A month or so before the wedding, email or call as many of those important people as you can and remind them to take preventative steps to stay healthy in the weeks leading up to your wedding. “Eat well, stay hydrated, get your rest (eight hours each night!) and allow yourself some time to relax,” says Erb.

 

Recognize symptoms.

“Heading into wedding week, your body and mind will feel so many emotions—excitement, anxiety, stress, and nervousness,” says Lindsey Sachs, a wedding planner and owner of COLLECTIVE/by Sachs in Boulder, Colorado, and Minneapolis. “Take a moment early in the week to do a self-health check to monitor possible symptoms that could grow into sickness.” Remember: The sooner you can recognize these symptoms, the sooner you can begin to treat them.

 

Get checked out by your doctor.

Even if you’re feeling slightly under the weather, it’s important to listen to what your body is trying to tell you and seek out medical assistance. “Explain that you have a big day coming up and you need to be able to get through it and hopefully feeling well,” says Erb.

Keep your family and friends informed on your progress.

If you are not feeling well—or a wedding VIP is not feeling well—let the other important members of the wedding party know. “Everyone will pitch in to assist as much as possible, to make sure the wedding day goes smoothly or to rearrange and reschedule plans as needed,” says Lehman. “Delegate duties and errands to your wedding party and family members.” If you’ve hired a wedding planner or coordinator, they can also assist in contacting vendors, wedding party members and guests and updating important information regarding the wedding. “We are here to help you,” Lehman adds.

 

Stay positive.

Sachs urges not to let your mind focus on the negative outcomes of being sick the week of the wedding. “The sickness of a wedding VIP can create unnecessary focus and attention away from the wedding as a result,” she says. “The marriage is what you want to remember and not who was sick.” Use the power of positive thinking to your benefit and breathe, think optimistically and hope for the best!

 

Have a “plan B” in place.

If a parent is sick, think of other people in advance that could step in for them last-minute if necessary, suggests Erb. Otherwise, come up with options to make it easier for them to “carry out their duties,” and rest in between or always have a chair to sit on. “Seek out someone that you trust to care for the one who is ill, so everyone can get through the day,” Erb says.

Wedding food and drinks have been getting more and more unique each year, but Brandi Hamerstone, a wedding planner at All Events Planned, expects to see couples really go for it in 2018. “This trend is happening mostly by a push from the groom!” she adds. “Having a bar with several versions of bourbon (or whisky and tequila), special glassware, and a knowledgeable bartender is a fun concept for everyone. It’s best to have something like this only available through cocktail houror later in the evening as it becomes a focal point and will definitely pull people around and keep them engaged.”

 

Suspended Florals

“In the past few years, floral design has taken a completely different turn. Where we primarily saw arrangements on tables, we’re now seeing flowers suspended from the ceiling,” explains Alison Laesser-Keck, event planner and designer at Alison and Bryan. “This creates an ethereal ambience that’s unexpected and multi-sensory. It just transports people and has a huge impact.” If you love the idea of a hanging floral installation, Laesser-Keck says to make sure you hire an experienced floral designer since there are a lot of logistics and liability to think about. “Find someone who will help you visualize the right location in your venue for maximum impact,” she adds. “Installations can be very expensive, so choose a few key places to do them in and make sure it’s where you’ll be spending the most time.”

 

Fashion Risks

Gone are the days of all-white, strapless wedding dresses, says Laesser-Keck. “Brides today are forgoing tradition and choosing a dress they love. Some go classic for the ceremony then change into something super fun for the party,” she explains. “Either way, we are definitely going in a direction where brides feel like they can showcase their personalities through their outfit choices.” So if you fall in love a patterned dress or one in an unexpected color, wear it.

 

Resurgence of ’80s and ’90s Style

“If the runways at New York Fashion Week were any indication, we’re going to be seeing a major comeback of ’80s and ’90s fashion inspiration in weddings next year,” explains Leah Weinberg, wedding planner, owner, and executive planner at Color Pop Events. “From colors like turquoise and hot pink and patterns like splatter paint and geometrics, those decades will inspire bold ideas that will pop up in a variety of ways—on invites, table runners, day-of signage, and much more.”

An Infusion of Metallics

Expect to see some glam events in 2018. According to Larissa Banting, President of Weddings Costa Rica and founder of The Lazy Bride, metallic color palettes will rule the 2018 wedding scene. “We’re seeing a return to luxe, with sparkling sequins overlays, chargers in every shade of metallics, and chairs in varying shades of gold,” she explains. “We’re seeing gold foil on invitations, menus, seating cards, wine glasses—everywhere!”

 

Majestic Marble

Stately, elegant marble will play a big role in upcoming weddings. If your venue already featrues walls or columns in the material, you’re in luck: Use these areas as a ready-made photo booth backgroup. If not, says Kimberly Lehman, wedding and event planner at Love, Laughter & Elegance, find other ways to bring the cool stone into your day. “Use marble patterns in smaller, more decorative ways, like on your invitations or wedding cake,” she suggests. “Marble drink coasters could double as place cards and favors, with names scripted in gold on each one.”

 

Incorporating Your Hobbies and Interests

“Keeping guests entertained and engaged is still popular, and things like open-air photo booths and lawn games are a great way to do that,” says Myriam Michel, owner and creative director of M&M Elite Events. “Couples can make this trend their own by incorporating their hobbies into the reception. For example, this past summer, our couple was big into hookah so we created a custom hookah bar lounge that was a huge hit with all her guests.”

 

Bold Floral Statements

Hanging installations of blooms aren’t the only floral statement couples will make in 2018. Lehman expects to see bouquet upgrades, too. “We’ve seen lush floral bouquets with large blooms and trailing greenery. This will continue into 2018,” she says. “The colors will be bold, and eclectic, rather than the soft pastels so often used. Oversized bouquets and table arrangements will take center stage, with smaller, more subtle accents of candles and ribbons. We will see more patterned floral gowns for brides and attendants, as well as blooms used creatively in hairstyles.”

 

Colored, Custom Tuxedos

Good news for the guys: You also have a trend to look forward to. Michel says that more grooms are making bolder fashion choices and will continue to do so next year. “Men’s fashion is stepping out big. They are making bold tuxedo and suit choices, choosing colors like burgundy, plum, and indigo and wearing slim fit cuts,” she says. “We also see grooms wearing custom bow ties and suspenders.”

5 Steps to Postponing a Wedding Because of Bad Weather

Any wedding planner or person who’s walked down the aisle can attest to the fact that there’s no such thing as a wedding going perfectly as planned. There will be bumps in the road to planning and executing your big day. And, while many of the obstacles that may arise can be overcome, others may be completely out of your control, for example postponing a wedding due to weather.

Most winter brides, especially those located in northern regions, are aware that their designated wedding date comes with the chance of snow, but those getting married during the three other seasons usually don’t have the slightest concern over anything more than rain preventing their wedding bells from ringing.

As we’ve come to realize, however, especially in recent years, natural disasters are happening more and more frequently. For this reason, it’s important for brides and grooms, as well as their families and friends, to be prepared for the unimaginable—and uncontrollable.

“It’s important to have a backup plan year round,” says Emily Sullivan of Emily Sullivan Events in New Orleans, Louisiana. “You could be contending with any kind of weather on your big day—it really varies depending on the region and situation, so it’s wise to have these conversations about the possibility of postponing a wedding with your wedding planner or coordinator prior to your wedding date.”

While having a plan B, C and even D early on is helpful, not all brides and grooms will—or can—be completely prepared. So if you get to the point in your wedding where postponing your wedding is imminent, here are expert strategies for how to handle the situation.

Step One: Ask for help

Even the most precise, organized and by-the-book wedding has its share of missing components. This means you likely won’t be able to handle all the tiny to-dos yourself. And this is especially true when dealing with something as catastrophic as a natural disaster. “If you are also personally affected with the crisis of a weather-related scenario (like we had here in Texas recently where bride’s home and her wedding venues were under water), you’ll need to enlist supportive help,” explains Cheryl Bailey of Yellow Umbrella Events in Austin, Texas. “Ideally, get the help of someone who’s not in the same situation as you, like your wedding planner or a friend or family member outside of the affected area, who can help you make decisions and start emailing and making calls.”

Step Two: Contact your venue immediately

“The sooner a couple gets in touch with their venue, the more options they will have surrounding the cancellation and hopefully not lose out on their deposits,” says Wendy Collins of Stowe Mountain Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. Remember that your venue is at the very center of your big day, as it will virtually house all of the rest of your vendors, like your DJ or band, florist, officiant, etc. Bailey suggests working out a plan with your venue in regards to how you should move forward when it comes to postponing your wedding. For example, moving your wedding to the night before or the next day. If this option isn’t available to you, Bailey recommends choosing an entirely new wedding date and time. “It’s important to try and secure this new date immediately, as other weddings will likely be in the same situation as you and the next available dates may fill up quickly.”

Step Three: Contact the rest of your vendors

Once you’ve established a plan of attack, and have a new wedding date secured, email all of your vendors and make them aware of the situation. “It’s easiest to email the entire group of vendors at once with a blanket statement about what is happening and then all vendors can be in the loop,” says Bailey. “Most vendors are very understanding when it comes to a weather-related situation that’s out of your control and will be very accommodating if you need to reschedule, as long as they have your new date available.” Do remember, however, that some of them may be booked on your new date, so you may lose your security deposit. “If you should need to book new vendors, such as a DJ or a photographer, your wedding planner can help you find the right ones quickly through their extensive network,” adds Kimberly Lehman of Love, Laughter & Elegance in Massillon, Ohio.

Step Four: Reach out to your guests

This one will likely be the most time-consuming, since you’ll likely have to reach out to certain friends or relatives via telephone as opposed to easier methods like email or social media. Bailey suggests starting by including as many guests as you have emails for on one email with information regarding the cancellation of your wedding and including information for a contact person they can reach out to in case they need further assistance.” Don’t hesitate to use your social media network, too. “Social media is your friend when postponing a wedding” she says. “You can always post on Facebook to let guests know what’s happening, or even start a private Facebook group where you add all of your guests, and even vendors, with the details of the cancellation and the reschedule date and details.” And be sure to update your wedding websitewith any updated information.

Step Five: Take a deep breath

By this point, overwhelmed doesn’t come close to describe how you and your partner are feeling. But, Bailey points out that the most important thing is that you and your guests are safe and out of harm’s way. “Stop, breathe deeply and calmly and focus on yourself and your partner and the fact that you are both together and able to handle this situation as a couple,” she says. Hold hands, hug, cry, laugh, pray—whatever you need to do to get by until you finally get to say say “I do!”
